It is estimated that in the United Kingdom someone falls victim to a heart attack every two minutes. Sadly, many of these people do not survive. Heart disease is the biggest killer in the UK, giving us one of the highest rates of heart disease in Western Europe.

A cardiac arrest can occur as the result of a heart attack, in lay terms, the heart stops beating. If a controlled electrical shock is passed through the heart very soon then there is a chance the heart can be returned to its normal rhythm. An ambulance will attempt to arrive within 8 minutes of a 999 call to a cardiac arrest but the chance of successfully defibrillating decreasing by around 10% for every minute lost, therefore it is widely accepted that the gold standard for defibrillation is within the first four minutes.
